To say that Origen was a controversial figure, would be an understatment. Origen speculated on many issues, Universal salvation being one of them, speculating that Satan himself might be saved, who are called the devil and his angels....after having undergone heavier and severer punishments...improved by this stern method of training, and [are] restored...and thus advancing through each stage to a better condition, reach even to that which is invisible and eternal... - De Prin. I.6.3 This speculation of course caused a lot of firestorm in Christian history. So much so that Origen was anathemacised(condemned and suspended). Nonetheless, Origen is still seen as a theological giant and a very godly man. Hence this books is an invitation to readers to take a closer look at this man, Origen, and judge for themselves whether his views are indeed heretical, or whether he does offer some interesting theological considerations. It is important to remember that when analying/criticizing this great Exegete, Origen himself admits in the preface of his work, First Principles that the many arguments presented in the work are debatable, and even went on to warn, that simple believers should not attempt reading it, owing to the many controversial issues in it. Origen aims to encourage theology/philosophy students to a thoughtful debate, and this is the aim of this book.
