51 of my jazz compositions are compiled in this volume. The fun of jazz is the focus of these compositions. They should provide new experiences and inspire you to new improvisations. This first volume of Brandung reflects my view on jazz, its compositions were borne from my feelings and thoughts about jazz. The perspectives, emotions and theoretical considerations that unfold in the compositions open up the possibility of being affected by a different understanding of jazz while playing, giving your gigs new impulses, and, possibly, to understand jazz in a new way.
Even in the form they are written down now, the compositions can be interpreted differently. Through your interpretations and arrangements entirely different sounds, forms of expression and moods can develop from the lead sheets. Some songs are created in such a way that one’s own rhythmization and embellishment of the melody is obvious or even necessary, the notation is thus rather a guideline. Other songs live from the notated rhythm, from the sequences of notes that should be followed precisely to make the spirit of the composition tangible.
A short text accompanies each composition. It can create a picture in you and your audience, convey an idea that makes it easier to access or allow to gain a new perspective on the song. These texts are collated in the middle of the booklet for easy reference. On the following pages you will find explanations of the scores, harmonics, and piano accompaniment.

51 Jazzkompositionen von Ferry Dahlke sind in diesem Band zusammengefasst - überwiegend 2016 bis 2019 komponiert. Sie stehen in enger Beziehung zu den Werkstattkonzerten, bei denen der Komponist mehrmals im Jahr seine aktuellen Werke vorstellt - als Klavierarrangement mit Improvisationen, umrankt von Erzählungen und Erklärungen zu den Stücken. Dieses Konzept findet sich in diesem Buch wieder: Jeder Komposition ist ein kurzer Text zur Seite gestellt. Viele Stücke sind klanglich dem Jazz der 30er bis 40er Jahren zuzuordnen, sind aber von der Struktur und Harmonik freier. Einige Kompositionen denken den Stil des Übergangs zur Jazzmoderne, den Thelonious Monk geprägt hat, weiter, bleiben dabei einprägsam und markant. Freie Balladen und soundmäßig der Moderne zugehörige Stücke runden den Band ab.
Brandung Band I richtet sich an alle, die mit Leadsheets vertraut sind - egal ob Jazz-Profi, Hobbymusiker oder Jazz-Student. Die Texte können dem Publikum und den Musikern den Zugang erleichtern und das Spielen und Improvisieren intensivieren.
